Kinnaur district, located in the northeast of Himachal, is one of the most beautiful places in Himachal Pradesh. This tremendously magnificent place is surrounded by Tibet in the east. District Kinnaur has three mountains ranges viz. Zaskar, The Himalayas and Dhauladhar range. Also, it is enclosing the valleys of Baspa, Spiti, Sutlej, and their tributaries.All these valleys are patently beautiful. The slopes are covered with thick woods of Orchards, fields and charming hamlets. The altitude of Kinnaur is 2320 to 6816 meters from the sea level.
Kinnaur is a religious place and natural Shivalinga (the symbol of Lord Shiva) is located at the top of the Kinner Kailash Mountain here. This gorgeous district was opened in 1989 for the visitors or outsiders.
The old India– Tibet road passes through the Kinnaur valley, near the bank of Sutlej. On the way to Kinnaur, it is not only scenic beauty which appeals to all, but different life style, culture, heritage, customs and tradition also allure.
The world famous “Kinnauri Apples” and dried fruits are grown here. People enjoy trekking and other adventures, including parikrama of snow covered Kinner Kailash. Very popular Nako Lake and three widely famous wildlife sanctuaries are also situated here.
Climate – Due to high elevation, most of Kinnaur enjoys a moderate climate. The winter season takes very long (from October to May) time duration and summer time is short here, from June to September only. The rain-shadow area comes under the upper areas of the valley falls. Monsoon rain falls on the lower part of Sutlej and Baspa valley.

Kinnaur is a terrific place for adventure tourism. There are many trekking routs in this place. Rock climbing and Ski slopes are available in Kalpa. In ancient times, people walked through dense geography of the place. The two valleys are connected by the numerous passes across the range. Today these valleys are famous as most mysterious, challenging and informative. From history’s perspective, a visit to Kamru Fort would be quite refreshing.
These valleys are having some of the most interesting meadows, view points, lakes and lush green pastures to add to their beauty and mystery. Its slopes are covered with Chir, Deodar, blue pine, rhododendrons and junipers up to 11,500 feet. Numerous tiny colorful birds dwell in the forests.

Kinnaur is famous for many things, especially for Handloom and Handicraft such as Shawls, Mufflers, Caps and articles of wood carving, the work of metal, silver and gold on the ornaments. Kinnaur is also world famous for its dried fruits like almonds, chilgoza, ogla, apricots and grapes. The wholesale shops of these things are available at Kalpa, Reckong Peo, Kharchham, Tapir etc. The retail priced shops are also available in every village.
