Legend Associated With Chamunda Devi Temple

It is believed that in the ancient times, demons Chanda and Munda annoyed goddess Ambika, which resulted in violent encounter between gods and demons. Angered by Chanda and Munda, goddess Ambika took the form of Kali and decided to engage in fierce battle with the demons all alone.After emerging victorious in the battle, goddess Ambika bought forward the heads of the demons Chanda and Munda and gave it to the goddess.



The goddess was delighted at the win and conferred the title Chamunda to Kali. A huge rush of devotees can be seen at the Chamunda Devi temple during the Navratras. Several people consider it auspicious to take a dip in the Ban Ganga river. It is believed that all your sins will be washed away by taking a dip in the river.



Temple’s Architecture

The temple has a main deity that is wrapped with a red cloth and devotees coming here are restricted from viewing the face of Chamunda. You will find images of Hanuman and Bhairav in the vicinity of the temple. The temple walls have beautiful carvings of scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.  Behind the temple there is a hollowed out space that has a stone lingam of Lord Shiva.

The most ideal time to visit Chamunda Devi temple is from mid June to late October. The temple is easily accessible by road and rail. The closest railway station is at Pathankot. For those willing to come by the narrow gauge trains, you can alight at Nagrota Bagwan station. Regular bus and taxi services connect you to the temple from various towns and major cities.
