Masroor Temple

The Ajanta Ellora of Himachal

Popularly known as the “Ajanta Ellora” of Himachal Pradesh, Masroor temple in Kangra district attracts people due to its remarkable monolithic rock cut temples. Masroor is situated approximately 38 km from Kangra town and it has 15 rock-cut temples beautifully carved in the Indo-Aryan style.
This temple is a unique structure nestled in the mesmerizing mountainous terrain. The Masroor rock cut temple is the most remarkable structure in the entire sub-Himalayan region. Nestled on a hill at a height of 760 m above sea level, one can get to see the snow-clad Dhauladhar ranges and the awe-inspiring scenic beauty of the entire town.

The main temple shrine has three images of Lord Rama, Lakshamana and Sita. Also known as Thakurdwara, the temple shrine is at the centre of the rock cut temple. The monument is a fantastic creation, with the carved panels having images of animals in the divine form. In the centre of the lintel is the image of Lord Shiva. It is due to the presence of Lord Shiva’s image people presume that the temple might have been originally dedicated to Lord Shiva. A large rectangular water pond is present at the temple complex. Beautiful ornamental works can be seen on the main door.

According to a legend, the Masroor temple was built by the Pandavas during their exile. The history and architecture of the rock cut temple at Masroor is sure to delight everyone coming here. The creativity of craftsmen of the 7th and 8th century is clearly known Dharamshala after crossing the Ranital Railway Station. It will not take more than one hour in covering the distance of 22 kms from the link road and the national highway. The nearest airport is the Gaggal airport.
