Solan
Solan is one of the twelve districts in Himachal Pradesh. It covers an area of 1936 square kilometers
and is located in the southern part of the state, about 50 km from the state capital, Shimla.
The Municipal Council of Himachal Pradesh is also located in Solan.
The name Solan is derived from the Hindu deity Shoolni Devi. It was once the capital of the native
state of Bhagat. Solan is also known as the “Mushroom City” due to the presence of a mushroom
research center at Chambaghat and large-scale mushroom farming in the region.
Solan lies on the road between Chandigarh and Shimla. Snowfall here is minimal and mostly occurs
at higher altitudes. It serves as a base station for tourist destinations such as Chail, Subathu,
Kandaghat, Churdhar Peak, and Dagshai.
