Choosing Chandigarh as your starting node is a tactical decision for the serious traveler. While most commercial tours originate in Delhi, starting from the “City Beautiful” eliminates the grueling 5-hour transit across the hot northern plains. By launching from Chandigarh, you hit the Himalayan expressway immediately, allowing your body and mind to begin the transition into the alpine climate of the Beas Valley much earlier.
This 10-day circuit is designed as a continuous ascent. We don’t just “go to Leh”; we traverse the shifting biomes of the Indian Himalayas. From the deciduous forests of the Shivalik foothills to the coniferous belts of Kullu, and finally into the rain-shadow region where the mountains turn into towering monoliths of purple and ochre—this is a masterclass in Himalayan geography.
Most Ladakh failures occur due to rapid ascent. Our “Ex-Chandigarh” itinerary utilizes a Double-Buffer strategy. We spend Night 01 in Manali ($2,050\text{m}$) and Night 02 in Jispa ($3,320\text{m}$). This gradual stair-stepping of altitude is the “Gold Standard” for high-altitude medicine. By the time you cross the Tanglang La pass at $5,328\text{m}$ on Day 03, your blood chemistry has already begun adapting, significantly reducing the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and ensuring you don’t spend your first day in Leh confined to a hotel room.
Day 01: Chandigarh to Manali (The Foothill Sprint)
Context: Arrival in Chandigarh. We move north via the Kiratpur-Nerchowk expressway. The transition from the planned city to the winding roads of the Mandi district serves as your psychological entry into the mountains. Overnight in Manali.
Day 02: Manali to Jispa via the Atal Tunnel (The Lahaul Entry)
Context: Crossing the $9.02\text{km}$ Atal Tunnel, we leave the “green” Himalayas behind. We enter the Lahaul Valley, where the Chandra River guides us to Jispa. This is the last night you will spend below $3,500\text{m}$ for the next week.
Day 03: Jispa to Leh (The Great Highland Crossing)
Context: A high-octane 10-hour drive. We tackle the Baralacha La, the Gata Loops, and the Morey Plains—a high-altitude plateau that feels like the surface of the moon. We summit Tanglang La before descending into the Indus Valley.
Day 04: Leh: The Confluence of Spirit and Stone
Context: A day of “active rest.” We visit the Sangam (Indus and Zanskar confluence) and the Magnetic Hill. We end the day at the Shanti Stupa, watching the sunset paint the Stok Kangri range in shades of gold.
Day 05: Leh to Nubra Valley (The Silk Route Legacy)
Context: Crossing the mighty Khardung La. We descend into the Karakoram-adjacent Nubra Valley. Here, the landscape features cold-desert sand dunes and the historic Hunder village, a key node on the ancient Silk Road.
Day 06: Turtuk: The Gateway to Baltistan
Context: We drive to the northernmost edge of India. Turtuk, opened to tourists only in 2010, offers a distinct Balti culture, apricot orchards, and a view of the K2 peaks. This is the most culturally unique day of the expedition.
Day 07: Nubra to Pangong Tso via Shyok (The River Road)
Context: We bypass Leh and take the tactical road following the Shyok River. This route is rugged and dramatic, leading us directly to the $134\text{km}$ long Pangong Tso, where the water temperature hovers near $0^\circ\text{C}$ even in summer.
Day 08: Pangong to Leh via Chang La (The Return)
Context: After a lakeside sunrise, we ascend Chang La ($5,360\text{m}$). We stop at the Thiksey Monastery, often called the “Mini Potala,” to witness the morning chants before returning to Leh.
Day 09: Leh to Manali (The Southern Descent)
Context: We begin our return, but the perspective is different. The south-facing views of the Gata Loops and the Baralacha La provide a new photographic dimension. Overnight in Jispa or Keylong.
Day 10: Manali to Chandigarh (The Homecoming)
Context: The final leg. As the air gets thicker and warmer, we descend back to Chandigarh, concluding an $\approx 1,400\text{km}$ loop across the roof of the world.
The Fleet: We exclusively use Toyota Innova Crystas and 4×4 Force Travelers. In the Himalayas, ground clearance and torque are not luxuries—they are necessities.
Oxygen Infrastructure: Every vehicle is equipped with a high-flow oxygen cylinder and a pulse oximeter for daily saturation checks.
Expert Logistics: Your Inner Line Permits (ILP) are processed 48 hours in advance. No queues, no paperwork, no delays.
Is the 10-day duration better than the 7-day one?
Yes. A 7-day trip often forces travelers to skip Turtuk or the strategic stay in Jispa. The 10-day “Ex-Chandigarh” circuit is the only way to truly experience the deep Balti culture of Turtuk and ensure your body is fully acclimatized for the high passes.
What is the “Shyok Route” and why do we take it?
The Shyok route connects Nubra directly to Pangong. It saves a full day of backtracking to Leh. It is a more adventurous road that offers incredible views of the Karakoram range, which you would otherwise miss.
Why shouldn’t I just fly into Leh?
Flying into Leh ($3,500\text{m}$) is a physiological shock. By driving from Chandigarh, you allow your body to build red blood cells naturally over three days. You arrive in Leh ready to explore, rather than spending your first 24 hours on oxygen support in a hotel.
Start your journey from Chandigarh early in the morning. Drive to Manali, which is approximately an 8-9 hour drive. Check into your hotel in Manali and relax after the long drive. Explore Manali if time permits.

Start your day early and drive towards Jispa. Enroute, visit Baralacha Pass and Suraj Tal. Arrive in Sarchu, a high-altitude desert campsite. Spend the night in tents and acclimatize to the high altitude.
Spend the day exploring Leh. Visit Shey Palace, Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, and the Leh Market. Acquire any permits you may need for upcoming trips to restricted areas.
Drive to Nubra Valley via Khardung La, one of the world's highest motorable passes. Visit Diskit Monastery and Hunder Sand Dunes. Enjoy a camel safari in the sand dunes. Stay overnight in a Nubra Valley camp.
After breakfast, drive to Pangong Lake, a stunning high-altitude lake. Enroute, visit the charming village of Durbuk and the Shyok River. Arrive at Pangong Lake in the evening and stay in a lakeside camp.
Spend the morning at Pangong Lake, enjoying the breathtaking scenery. Drive back to Leh in the afternoon. Reach Leh by evening and rest.
Start your journey towards Zanskar Valley, particularly Padum. This is a long drive, so be prepared for around 12 hours on the road. Enjoy the stunning landscapes along the way. Check into your accommodation in Padum.
Spend the day exploring the Zanskar Valley. Visit the Sani Monastery, Stongdey Monastery, and the scenic Suru Valley. Experience the unique culture and beauty of Zanskar.
Start your journey back towards Manali via the same route. It's another long drive, so make sure to start early. Reach Manali and check into your hotel. Rest and relax in Manali.
Spend your last morning in Manali at your leisure. Depart for your onward journey or head back to Chandigarh.
