Manikaran is nestled in the beautiful Parvati Valley, in between Beas and Paravati River just 45 km from Kullu. It is located at altitude of 1760 m and is a sacred pilgrimage for both Hindus and Sikhs. It is believed that once when Lord Shiva along with Goddess Paravati was traveling through this valley, Parvati accidentally dropped one of her precious earrings. The earring was taken by Shesha (serpent deity) into the earth. Angered by this, Lord Shiva performed the ‘Tandava’ (Dance of destruction). This caused turmoil in the land and water leading Shesha to surrender the earring. And, this how this place got its name.
The place is famous for the Lord Ramchandra temple and Sri Guru Nanak Devji’s Gurudwara. Besides, the natural hot water springs are very popular among tourists. It is believed that by drinking and bathing in these hot water springs one can attain salvation.
